Christian Education

Being educated as a Christian, growing in our faith, is a lifelong endeavor; and our aim at All Souls is to provide opportunities to be educated and to grow throuhgout a lifetime.

For the youngest among us, we provide a staffed nursery during our Sunday service where children up to the age of 3 can experience the love and acceptance of God through interaction with the nursery attendant and age appropriate stories and play.

For children aged 4 to 12 we offer a Sunday School program that is developed around the Bible readings for each Sunday.  Following the Children's Sermon our children leave with their Sunday School teachers and explore the morning lessons through all sorts of media and experiential activities.  This Sunday School time also includes shared prayer and other worship elements which mirror the Sunday service to enable our children to feel even more at home in church.

A confirmation class for those in middle school occurs in the spring of the year and helps our older children look at questions of faith and the church while being challenged to develop their own statement of faith and be in service to the community.

There are a number of opportunities for intergenerational learning and growth as well.  We offer a yearly family retreat where families with young children go away for a weekend to explore a variety of

topics such as the spiritual life in the family, how to

deal with bullying form a christian perspective, how

we responsibly use the resources God has given us,

etc. Our Maundy Thrusday service is another time

when young and old alike have the chance to grow

together as we share a common meal and learn

about the meaning of foot washing, the Passover,

the meaning of service during the Lenten season

   and more.

There are three regular venues for adult education at All Souls - the Eight O'clock Hour, the Wednesday Bible Study, and the Spirituality Group.

The Eight O'Clock Hour gathers at, you guessed it, 8:00 Sunday morning.  As they meet in the parlor, a wide range of topics is discussed.  One quarter they might do a study of comparative religions looking at Judaism, Islam, and Hinduism.  Then in the next quarter they could pull out the latest work of Marcus Borg or a classic like Dynamics of Faith by Paul Tillich.

The Wednesday Bible Study to begin in January 2017, 10:30 - 11:30 AM,  is a gathering to reflect on the upcoming Sunday's lectionary text(s).

The Spirituality Group meets two Monday evenings a month.  It offers time for quiet prayer and meditation as well as the chance to reflect on our own spiritual journeys.  The grist for discussion is the study of books by such spiritual giants as Merton, Nouwen and others.  This group is led by a church member who has a doctorate in spiritual formation.

Our goal at All Souls is to offer various opportunities to continue to stretch and grow in the faith journey of all who are part of our fellowship.  All are welcome to each of these endeavors as we strive to grow in faith and practice.
