Pastor’s Message…

Well, if ten days ago it was Independence Day then this must be Bastille Day.  My mother’s maiden name was DeLong, a good French surname.  In truth I never thought about that much since all the DeLongs I knew came from Perry County Ohio, but there is some French blood mixed in with the Scottish, German, Dutch, and Irish.  I guess that’s why I like beer (from the Germans), I’m thrifty (from the Scotts), of the Reformed faith (from the Dutch), cry at sad times and dance at happy ones (from the Irish), and love good food (from the French).

What a mutt I am.  As Mae West said, “I’m as pure as the driven slush.”, at least in terms of my blood lines.  But what a wonderful thing to be so confused.  I can appreciate the bagpipes and Bach.  I can eat sauerbraten and shortbread with the same gusto.  What a wonderful thing!  When I was growing up my mother was a meat and potatoes kind of cook, until I got into Jr. High at which point suddenly all these German dishes started appearing, then came Hungarian, then Lebanese, then Greek.  My palate got seriously challenged and thankfully changed.  Mac and cheese got replaced by lamb shanks and lentils.  Life became fuller and a lot tastier.

The organizing board of the Pre-Day School was talking about scheduling and holidays and the like the other day and we came up with this idea of celebrating Christmas (hardly novel), but then we also started talking about celebrating Hanukkah and Ramadan, Chinese New Year and Buddha’s birthday.  Not just so we could have a party every other week, but so the palates of the children in our care might be challenged and changed.  If we want them to grow in this world that is so full of differences, we need to help them experience in some small way what those differences are like so they can become better citizens, so they can perhaps look at their neighbor, not with suspicion, but with appreciation for who they are.

That’s not a bad idea for the rest of us either.  Jesus did not reject someone just because – because of where they were born, because of the language they spoke, because of what party they belonged to.  Jesus accepted and loved all, even us so maybe we might try that too.  Maybe we could learn more about others so they don’t seem like a threat.  Maybe we could seek to accept and love even as we have been accepted and loved.  Maybe once again a little child will lead us.     -Bruce

Worship This Sunday…

We are delighted to have Chae Kum Kim as our guest pianist this morning.  Although she never received formal musical training, Chae Kum was always surrounded by music while growing up in Korea, and she taught herself to play the piano as a child.  She accompanied the choir at her church as a teenager in Pusan and later in Seoul.  And, of course, Chae Kum has had years of experience accompanying her husband Matthew!  Thank you, Chae Kum!

3BPraying for the Church…

Part of what we are called to do as believers is to remember that we are all part of the same body, and that if one member of the body is in pain, the whole body suffers.  If one part of the body rejoices, the whole body joins in their elation.  With that in mind we ask that you remember those of this congregation and those of our presbytery family listed below as you offer your daily prayers. Del Monte Family, Beatrice Eldridge, Daniel & Doris Lin Kim, Eugene Kim, Jimmy Gillan, Irvington-On-Hudson Elder Mary Lynne Flowers – Stated Clerk, Synod.
